RQ-4 Global Hawk

Description

A long-range high-altitude UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), the Global Hawk is an extremely capable platform for persistent surveillance. The Block 30 variant is a multi-intelligence platform incorporating EO/IR cameras, synthetic aperture radar, and high and low band SIGINT sensors. Its key weakness is a lack of survivability compared to classified stealth UAVs currently in service. The performance of its camera suite is also limited at its operating altitude.

PRIMAL Assessment

PRIMAL doesn’t have the resources to operate such a complex surveillance aircraft. Indeed the US military is the only operator of a HALE (high altitude long endurance) drone. When combined with other assets such as AWACS and JSTARS aircraft, space-based sensors, and advanced ground based radar, the US government has an unparalleled capability to detect sea and air movement. PRIMAL therefore relies on civilian cover stories and subterfuge to avoid detection.
