Dolphin-2

Description

The Dolphin-2 is the Israel Navy’s name for its latest version of the German 209 class submarine. Equipped with state-of-the-art air-independent propulsion utilizing fuel cell technology, they are among the stealthiest submarines in the region. Key capabilities include the ability to launch nuclear-tipped cruise missiles, deploy ten special operators, and fulfill a number of intelligence gathering tasks.

PRIMAL Assessment

The Dolphin-2 class is highly-capable for its role. However, it is unlikely to be found far from the shores of Israel due to having limited endurance compared to larger nuclear submarines. Additionally access through the Suez canal or to the Israel Navy port at Eilat may be restricted during times of conflict. If rumors that Israeli submarines are operating in the Arabian Sea are true, then it is likely they would require support from a covert submarine tender.
