AN/PVS-14

Description

The AN/PVS-14 is a gen-III night vision device in widespread use by US and allied armed forces. First introduced to the US Army in 2000, the basic design had already been available for a number of years. Like most night vision devices it works by amplifying the existing ambient light, so in areas with very little ambient light it has a built-in infra-red illuminator. Can be used mounted on a helmet or head harness, attached to a rifle or camera, or simply hand-held.

PRIMAL Assessment

Still an effective night-vision device, this fifteen year old technology is gradually being surpassed by systems that are more compact, offer wider field of view, adapt to changing light conditions, and integrate thermal imaging. PRIMAL’s custom full-face helmets issued in the ‘CAT’ loadout have integrated wide-angle image-intensifiers fused with thermal imaging.
